Company of Heroes + Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Review
Quick Summary:
+ Graphics are amazing
+ First good WW2 RTS
+ Great physics
+ Cut screens are well scripted and in good quality
- You need a good computer to play this game properly
With so many wanna be World War 2 games out there, it was about time they made a good one. Now this one isn’t your standard first/third person shooter where you recreate the life of a soldier on the front line. Company of Heroes takes a much different approach. It puts you in the position of a commander controlling an army which you create. I think it was about time for a World War 2 real time strategy game. THQ did a great job with game, allowing their research department to clarly show us what each faction of the war brought to the table. The primary storyline does not totally stick to the historical record of events, though it does use divide up the mission and objectives based real things that happened.

Your computer setup will determine how well you actually get to see the games graphics. If you have a computer with a high end CPU, a good graphics card and lots of ram, you will get a very realistic and beautiful visual experience, you will also receive a lag free game play experience. If you don’t have such a great computer don’t expect to play this game without lag and a lot of pixelated character and environmental graphics. If you have Vista and a Direct X 10 graphics card (and more ram and a stronger CPU) then you can get all those great graphics and make them better in Direct X 10. Yes, this is one of the first game that I have seen that uses the Direct X 10 graphics engine without actually affecting game play all that much. Also the cut screens are well scripted and are in DivX, giving them exceptional quality.

Game play is good so long as you have plenty of hardware power. If your computer isn’t strong enough, then expect lag that can cause the game to become frustrating because your troops will magically move right into the fray and end up dying. If you do have a good computer then you will find this game challenging, but not overly to hard. This sort of difficulty allow for a very enjoyable game play experience. Playing online is really fun (well unless you hit one of those people who only play this game). Other than that there can be some lag, but that all depends on your and your opponents Internet connection type and speed. If you find yourself seeking for more of this game move on to the expansion: Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts (this expansion is included in the gold edition of the game). This expansion allows you to play as the British or the Germans. Allowing all the same game play features and adding another set of missions where you play as the new factions.
